Tensions created over time can become ‘stuck’ and may be reflected in our bodies in the way we clench our jaw, hunch our shoulders or simply can’t relax. We may not even notice this as it has become so habitual and familiar. When we have to fit in, need to feel in control of life or keep our feelings at bay, we instinctually keep ourselves together by muscle tension and restricted breath.
Marion Rosen, Founder, called this ‘unconscious barriers against living’. By slowing down and listening inward, Rosen Method’s gentle touch makes it possible to locate and release tension and in this way find the real person that has become hidden over time behind his or her muscular armouring, pain or other symptoms. As physical changes occur, our emotional anatomy also shifts, often leading to greater self-acceptance, rebalancing of the nervous system and an integration of body and mind.
It is important that you feel as safe and comfortable as possible. The session begins lying face down on a massage table and you will be asked to turn over and lie face up halfway through. A blanket is used to cover the body for privacy and warmth and pillows are used to provide support. Allow 60mins for a Rosen Method Bodywork appointment 45mins of which is the session itself. It is generally done with the client unclothed except for underwear or dressed to their comfort level.
I prefer to start the session working over the blanket giving us both some time to relax into the session and to start to become aware of areas of holding and tension. The blanket is then drawn down to the waist and the practitioner works more directly on the areas she feels drawn to, sometimes verbalizing the changes that she sees enabling you to go deeper into the process.
As the session draws to a close, you will be covered with the blanket again and encouraged to rest for a while before getting up and dressed. Ideally, you should allow yourself a quiet hour after the session without other commitments to support your system’s gentle integration of the experience.
During or after a session, you may experience a broad range of sensations as a consequence of relaxation of muscular tension and increased self awareness and personal insight.

Rosen would not be recommended if:
If you have a severe mental health problem
If you are in a time of crisis (such as a recent bereavement)
If you are in within the first year of recovery from alcohol or drug addiction.
